Week 13

Most of today’s developed economies have evolved from the familiar industrialization path. The advancement of manufacturing industries – such as textiles, steel, automobile manufacturing – has emerged from the remnants of traditional occupations and guild systems, transforming agricultural societies into city. Farmers became factory workers, a process that provided the basis for not only an unprecedented increase in economic production capacity, but also a major revolution in social and political organizations. However, besides the positive effects that process of industrialization and modernization bring back, there are also negative effects,it is affecting significantly to the economic and social life our country. In particular, the impact on the environment is a typical example. The fact is still going on, despite the voices and warnings from everywhere, every industry, every level, every class of people … about the harmful effects of pollution and environmental degradation school, but that reality still exists with an increasingly serious level, photo adversely affecting the natural and social environment, threatening human health and life sustainable development of the economy. It seems, the more economic development, the faster the cause of industrialization and modernization of the country, the more environmental problems will become a more pressing problem.

Going with industrialization is urbanization, people will move from countryside to city in order to have a better life. Because most of the factory is in a city not in a countryside. The number of people in city is growing in an explosive way. In this week reading “planet of slums” has given some evidence for the increasing population in cities such as ” In 1950 there were 86 cities in the world with a population of
more than one million; today there are 400, and by 2015 there will be
at least 550.” We could see the number is increasing significantly and the author guess that the number could increase more in the next few years.

Family migration

There is nothing much about my parent. As I know from my grandfather, when he were borned, he already close to the city where we are living now. So I guess my parent is 99% Vietnamese, and moreover we are Hanoian (Hanoi is our capital and it is very rare people who was born in here). But back in the day, when our country was in war, I been told that our my dad of my grandfather actually move to here. There was a migration of nearly one million Vietnamese from North Vietnam (a military gathering area controlled by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam) to South Vietnam (a military gathering area managed by the French Union) in the years 1954–1955. But after the South revolution, my great grandfather comeback to the North and started a new life here. I suppose that people moved to the South because they scared of hunger such as hunger in 1945 that estimate about 400,000 to 2 million people starved to death in the North. There was a lot of difficult in Vietnam in the 19th century so it is reasonable for many people to move to the South and then comeback to their home in the North like my great grandfather did

British colonialism in India

Until 1813, the British East India company still followed a major ideal that did not interfere with religion, society and the cultural life of India. After 1813 the British began to take steps to change social and cultural change in this colony. Policies for social and cultural modernization India is encouraged by missionaries and in major change religious books of the British East India Company.

There are two main bases to establish: one is, the main purpose of the platform it is upholding the law, order and the sustainability of the ruler; second, the British in India are foreign powers, they are very hard to hope to receive sympathy and support from the indigenous people. Therefore, it is necessary to rely on forces standing higher than the people to maintain their control over Indian territory. We could be seen in ‘Colonialism and Its Forms of Knowledge”, The underlying implication of college data is to form these parts of the population to generate hatred among religious groups instead of focusing on British rule and the exploitation of Indian resources. It can be said that the most serious and long-term consequences of the owner colonialism in India is a conflict of religion, ethnicity, nation; is division; is decades of enmity between nations – nations on the Indian subcontinent; are the contradictions long-term conflict with neighboring countries.

Response to Latin America

This week, we are covering the Latin America region. We could see from professor Holt’s lecture and in Bayly, some of the trouble was from the America intervention. America believed the Cuban revolution created a threat to America people and so they tried to do put Cuba in a dictatorship. As in Bayly, we could know that the Latin America political had been struggled because of the intervention from America. America supported the dictatorship in Latin America because they want to take advantage of it. And because of that, there was an armed revolution which also had its origins in the Mexican revolution. A key event was the Cuban revolution of Fidel Castro in 1956 which also inspired by the armed revolution. America wants to get rid of Castrol because of his communist ideals and his relationship with the Soviet Union. Thank to professor Holt’s lecture this week, we have known more about the intervention of America to Latin America country which is Cuba. The America intervention only makes Cuba’s socialist movement became worst. They tried to remove or assassinate Castro, professor Holt told us that they tried to kill him by poisoning his diving suit. In Bayly, because of the America intervention, the economic blockade made Cuba economic dramatically go down and so they have to dependence on the USSR. And some of the trouble from America’s intervention was “The Bay of Pigs incident” and “Cuban missile crisis”.

Judt Response

1

One of these thematic shapes of Judt is Europe’s ideological past. This thematic shape is coming from the failure of the Fascism which was defeated in the Word War 2 and then also the communist system failed in some country especially in Russia. And so the modern European state was born from the Democratic ideals.

2

The political topography was changed by the divided between left and right politicial parties.Morover French neo-Gaullist and Swedish Social Democracts have the same common with their respective ideological forebears.

3.

Judt observation is the terrorism is one of the big concerns in Europe. And so Europe could not have peace if there is no other way to protect the country. Connect to the poster in The World Transform, we can see the terrorism is the biggest fear of Europe especial the Islamic terrorism.

Africa’s economy

The struggle for Africa as a colony between imperialist countries made relations between these countries tense, stimulating chauvinism and belligerence. Conflicts among European countries caused a series of crises, one culminating in the First World War. The contradictions that could not be fully resolved by World War I were the seeds of World War II. Because of the Europe was trying to improve their power and so expand their country, they need to improve their economy by take control other countries. Places like Asia and Africa seemed likely sources for contribution, it was a source for power and economy growth. The European control a lot of land in African, most of the raw material was taken by the European. They have been forced to become an export country with all the material such as coffee and tea. Because of that their economy fall down and combine with the wage, it made the country economy decreased. However,in Economist “A hopeful continent”, we are seeing a rising in economy of Africa. European left and they provide Africa with a lot of technology which is a start for a technology revolution later. Many oilfields and gold mines could start again to produce revenue and so the economy would raise again.
